It is an easy answer.
In the early days of Christianity, they were indeed followers of the King. As time moved on, Christianity became a religion, and they stopped following the King. Today's Christianity does not represent what the King taught. Again, Christians started with King Yeshua, but over the years, Christianity left the King and stopped following Him.
First, I will give my definition of religion.
Religion is man's way to serve his god.
The other day, a "pastor" in Africa asked me about being taught from the Word of God. Before beginning that journey, I like to ask a few important questions.
1. Do you teach the Bible, or do you teach Christianity?
2. Do you teach the marriage law of pope pius IV (1563 - Council of Trent)? This Christian law of 1563 teaches that a man can only have one wife (the one wife law). The same law of 1563 also teaches that having concubines is a sin (the concubines is sin law).
3. Do you keep the Passover as our Father instructed, or do you keep easter as the catholic church instructed? Learn about how Christianity embraced pagan days.
4. Do you rest on the Sabbath as our Father instructed, or do you not keep it as Constantine in 321 AD instructed?
5. If you love our King, do you keep the law/commandments as He instructed, or do you teach the commandments are not required to be kept by Christians? Our King said; It is written.
John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

The King is called Yeshua Hamashiach, and He did not teach Christianity/religion, He taught the Way, His Way. This is why I say I am not a Christian, I am a follower of the Way (Hebrew Roots movement).
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
2000 years ago, a man/King came from a Kingdom and told us to SEEK it first with its righteousness. If we love what we found and we decide to join/follow Him into His Kingdom, He told us to keep His law/Torah/commandments as part of a covenant. When we begin to do what He told us, He will then ask His Father to give us a precious gift. It is written.
John 14:15-16 If ye love me, keep my commandments (our requirement - our part of the covenant). 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (His precious Gift - His part of the covenant), that he may abide with you for ever;
If we say we know/love Him and do not do what He has told us, we are called liars in His eyes. It is written.
1 John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth NOT his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
If we say we know/love Him and do not do what He has told us, we end up living in sin. It is a sin called iniquity. We will be told to depart from His presence due to iniquity. It is written.
Matt 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
When we follow man's way/commandments, God ignores our efforts to please Him. It is written.
Matt 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
In Short:
If you love Him and keep His commandments, you start your journey to His Kingdom.
If you say you love Him and do not keep His commandments, you are on your way to hell.
If you do not love Him, but you keep His commandments, you are on your way to hell.
If you do not love Him and do not keep His commandments, you are on your way to hell.
---
What happens to people who loved Him but did not know or were misguided about His commandments? These people are saved by His GRACE, and their home would be in His Kingdom.
Be blessed in understanding.
